N1005 IBM Research: smarter cities

Traffic at the intersection of sensor data and social media

<span lang="EN-IE" style="font-family: "HelvNeue Light for IBM",sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt;">Dublin has one of the most advanced intelligent traffic systems in Europe. The city is full of sensors at its intersections (induction loops counting cars, remotely controlled traffic lights, and traffic cameras) and on its bus fleet equipped with on-board satellite positioning units, all streaming data in real-time. Now, it is turning to crowdsourcing. The city is plugging social media data into its INSIGHT System, powered by research done at IBM Research-Ireland. Two technologies <span style="font-family: "HelvNeue Light for IBM",sans-serif;">use data from the commuting public to help urban traffic controllers get a better view of city roads to more-quickly respond to incidents, and issue alerts, thereby improving the accuracy of the Insight system and the availability of traffic alerts for Dubliners.

Jakub Marecek

<span lang="EN-IE" style="font-family: "HelvNeue Light for IBM",sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt;">As IBM Research-Ireland’s Jakub Marecek and his numerous co-authors from the INSIGHT project explain in their paper Heterogeneous Stream Processing and Crowdsourcing for Urban Traffic Management, at the International Conference on Extending Database Technology<span lang="EN-IE" style="font-family: "HelvNeue Light for IBM",sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: NimbusSanL-Bold; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">, <span lang="EN-IE" style="font-family: "HelvNeue Light for IBM",sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt;">crowdsourcing is as a tool for resolving ambiguity in intelligent transport systems.

<span lang="EN-IE" style="font-family: "HelvNeue Light for IBM",sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt;">"It <span lang="EN-IE" style="font-family: "HelvNeue Light for IBM",sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: CMR9;">queries volunteers close to the sensors that disagree (with reports) and estimates what has actually happened, considering the reliability of participants' responses so far.

<span lang="EN-IE" style="font-family: "HelvNeue Light for IBM",sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: CMR9;">“The benefits of this approach are two-fold. It was part of an EPA-funded project for the development of a contaminant warning system after 9/11, which required modelling contaminant transport and water quality in water distribution systems. The main goal was to develop a fine resolution model capable of predicting how water is used in an urban water network across space and time.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The experimental part involved setting up fixed monitoring stations to collect smart meter data from thousands of utility customers. Cincinnati Water Works was one of the first utilities in the US to fully adopt smart meters in their metro area – which created a unique research opportunity for me.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">My first challenge was to find areas where the stations could monitor the consumption of a sample of users as large and as diverse as possible. This required a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis of topography, demographics and socio-economics. The data collection stage took about two years and provided a dataset rich enough to understand, characterize, and represent water usage.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">One of the main outcomes of the project was a model for synthetic generation of demands that vary periodically and resemble real smart meter demands. The solution methodology we proposed decomposed the overall problem into smaller more tractable problems aimed at a single type of decision. We found that examining each problem individually had the advantage of simplifying implementation of software and interpretation of results, and allowing parts of the problem to be examined in parallel.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The annual expenditure of the simulated town (called “C-Town”) was €3.9 million, but our models were able to reduce this to €1.5 million. This took into account both capital expenditure (rehab and infrastructure such as replacing pumps, pipes, valves, tanks) and operational expenditure (electricity costs as well as environmental penalties for wastage). Our main recommendation to "C-Town" was to invest about €600,000 to correct background leakage issues. This greatly reduced the amount of water loss in the network, as well as costs such as environmental penalties. This solution illustrates what a city could achieve in terms of managing leakage and overall operations.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Our work paid off as we won the competition for having the best combination of solution methodology, and economy of proposed infrastructural and management changes.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">What are you working on now?

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;">EA: I am currently working on a Water Networks Analytics Toolkit. So, as you drive through the EZPass toll on the Triborough Bridge, you – or more accurately, your hybrid car – gets a message asking “Can the City of New York switch your powertrain to ‘all electric power’ while you’re visiting?” If you say “yes,” your toll fee will be discounted.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt; line-height: 107%;">That’s the concept behind patent 8,781,668: create a location-based vehicle powertrain regulation system. <span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">

<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">I had the idea while riding around Bangkok. Many of the taxi drivers can switch their fuel sources from standard petrol (regular unleaded gas) to cheaper liquefied petroleum (such as propane or butane). Why not have software automatically make a switch based on environmental conditions? That’s essentially what the Thai cabbies were doing manually to save a few baht. But sensors do. Sensors that send data to weather stations, and city officials. If our cars, in turn, have sensors that picked up this data, and could communicate with these third parties, our car’s powertrain could adjust its emissions while driving.<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt; line-height: 107%;">

<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Currently, only plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) can make this kind of auto-powertrain switch (unless you count taxicabs from Thailand). But think about driving around in a congested city. You’re probably not driving in a way to notice the difference between a gas-powered versus all electric engine. So, with your permission, why not let the environment – via a sensor – tell your car to stay on “electric” while you’re in city limits?

<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Today’s hybrids work only to maximize the vehicle’s performance based on what the driver does. This invention just adds external considerations to the vehicle’s efficiency calculations. This means retrofitting is doable by adding a sensor or two, and updating the onboard software to respond to their measurements. And in the patent’s current form, the driver would still have to agree to allow any of these outside adjustments. (So don’t worry, nothing will take over your car!) While the hybrid market share currently hovers around 3 percent, PHEVs continue to grow, and J.D.
