What is the grand vision for cloud cryptography?

Christian Cachin (CC): We want to make processing data in the cloud more secure and more reliable for users. While most people think of the cloud as a giant hard disk in the sky, you can actually do advanced analytics and processing in the cloud, as well. Clearly any data in the could needs to be secure, so we want to apply cryptographic protection to make sure that your data does not leak to parties that shouldn't have access to it.

Q. Can you discuss the three new EU projects which have recently been awarded?

EU Projects defending your data in the cloud

CC: Sure, SUPERCLOUD is based on a cloud-of-clouds concept for preventing vendor lock-in and for enhanced resilience. It picks up from where our previous project on trustworthy clouds, called TClouds for short, has brought us. In SUPERCLOUD we will focus on user-centric management of security and dependability in a clouds of clouds, together with partners from the telecom and medical industries as well as academia. We will build end-to-end security into distributed storage platforms and provide self-managed security services to users.

ESCUDO-CLOUD stands for Enforceable Security in the Cloud to Uphold Data Ownership. "Escudo" is Portuguese for “shield.” Its goal is to give back to users the control over their data in the cloud. Our enforceable security techniques rely on wrapping the data cryptographically, to provide a layer of protection against the prying eyes of whomever may get improper access to it. This moves the trust boundary to the client side, outside of the cloud.

And finally, WITDOM aims to enhance privacy and security for personal data in the cloud. It’s actually short for for empoWering prIvacy and securiTy in non-trusteD envirOnMents. It will enable secure sharing and processing of sensitive health data such as genetic information and build methods to protect financial data outsourced to cloud services. Cryptography forms the basis for the privacy-enhancing technologies that will be used. We have legal experts on board here as well, who will assess the technical methods from their perspective.

Q. What is the biggest challenge?

CC: Actually, there are many fascinating challenges. Most importantly, we have to protect the cloud from its users. Think about this, as a cloud provider you are giving total strangers access to your infrastructure and as with IBM Softlayer, clients can get access down to the bare metal of the servers. But what if some nefarious user sets up an account and tries to steal data or plant viruses in your system? It’s like giving a stranger the keys to your house. We need to protect and isolate such instances with system tools that exploit strong cryptography.

In addition, many servers in the cloud are shared across multiple tenants. For example, as a cloud provider you might suddenly have data from competitors on the same machine. And as a client you don’t want anyone else to see your data. So we help address this with a rules and policies based system to prevent these types of incidents.

If only erasing data was this easy. Photo credit: Christian Cachin

On the other side, we have the clients. They are concerned about their precious data. They want to limit their exposure as much as possible and reveal as little as is needed for processing the data for a desired outcome. Today, they already have control of which data centre their data is stored in. For example, a German bank can’t store its client data in a cloud outside of the EU. But if clients want to enable certain kinds of analytics that do not need the full data set, then the data can be masked cryptographically and only the relevant features are revealed.

Another challenge is trusting the data. How do I know what I am receiving from the cloud is what my friend or collaborator has posted there, that it has not been altered by spyware or subverted by a virus? So we need to detect any violations that may have occurred in the cloud for users who, for example, may be collaborating in the cloud on a joint project. How can the data integrity be verified? We are building systems to address this such as our verification of integrity and consistency of cloud object storage tool (check it out at SYSTOR 2015 at the end of May 2015).

Finally, we are also embracing key management in the cloud. Think of it as keys-as-a-service. Apart from providing enterprise cloud customers with strong protection for their cryptographic keys, this has also a secondary use in ensuring the proper deletion of files. We all know that traces of data remain even when we empty the virtual trash bin, but this isn’t acceptable for highly sensitive or personal data. Cloud providers need to offer this assurance and guarantee it - we call this novel feature secure deletion.

We are developing software to address this, which is analogous to smashing a hard disk in a million pieces with a hammer, except that it will be done by destroying an encryption key, alone. The software will also have polices to know if something shouldn’t be deleted, such as corporate financial records when an employee leaves the company, which may be needed for audits.

So you can see we have our work cut out for us. Thankfully we have a few years to tackle these challenges.

Q. The cloud market is a multi-billion industry already, don’t these technologies exist?

CC: Yes and no. The EU is funding this research to not only help cloud providers, developers and users to understand it better, but also to make it open and sharable. Everything developed in these three projects is funded with public money, so we will publish our results and make most of it available as open source.

So, we are planning for the future to enable more types of businesses to trust and rely on the cloud for any workload.

Clouds make large cloud-to-cloud data transfers for critical administrative functions like data center backups and workload balancing. But a typical private cloud can also connect to a public cloud to access a specific service or type of data to create a “hybrid” cloud. All of that data sharing takes networks – and bandwidth. My team, along with AT&T and Applied Communication Sciences, funded by the DARPA CORONET program, created the technology to make cloud-to-cloud connectivity “elastic” in order to make using the cloud (and paying for that usage) more flexible. Not every service, at every moment of the day, needs peak network availability, so why have the volume turned up all the time?</xml>

Part of the reason for today’s “always on” approach is to always have a secure, reliable network for clouds to connect and operate. Making the bandwidth flexible means being able to adjust the bandwidth on existing connections, which in turn requires making extremely fast decisions, using data center software, about adjustments between cloud-to-cloud connections. With network carriers moving their hardware to software on the cloud, elastic scaling will become commercially available. For example, moving the network infrastructure that manages our smartphone data from a physical box to virtualized software in the cloud can help make elastic connectivity possible – and less expensive for the carrier.

What this partnership has shown in a proof of concept, and now wants to deliver commercially, is a cloud system that monitors and automatically scales the network up or down as applications need. It works by the cloud data center sending a signal to a network controller that describes the bandwidth needs, and which cloud data centers need to connect. The key technology in the cloud IBM will provide is the intelligent orchestration capability that knows when and how much bandwidth to request and between which clouds. The cloud data center orchestrator will continue to get more intelligent in its utilization of the network. Longer term an application on your smart phone might be smart enough to request bandwidth from the network controller.

Today, a truck drives out to install new network components and administrators set up the Wide Area Network connectivity. Physical equipment has to be installed and configured if you want to turn up a WAN signal. We could do all that virtually by using intelligence in the cloud to request bandwidth from pools of network connectivity when needed by an application. When the peak requirement has been met, the cloud can signal the network carrier to release available bandwidth back to the pool.

The difference in set up time between today’s cloud-to-cloud networks, to what we have demonstrated, is days or months versus seconds.

Going from always on to always elastic

To make this all work, we demonstrated a cloud platform running in the cloud data center that manages connections and has the intelligence to make fast decisions to signal a controller in the core network for connectivity at the right time (to make the cloud-to-cloud connection elastic). Then, our partners’ controller orchestrates the requests from our cloud to ensure the requests get to the correct layer in the network. The carriers will provide a multi-layer network with different bandwidth capabilities to service different request from the cloud, such as a request to synchronize a critical application database so that a smartphone user gets up-to-the-moment information, or a full data center backup in the event of a catastrophic event.

The connection request might be set up on an IP network, sub-wavelength or possibly a full wavelength layer for demanding applications depending on the bandwidth requested. Wavelength in this context means optical carrier signals multiplexed over an optical fiber. Each wavelength represents a high bandwidth connection to carry our application data. Those wavelengths can be sub-divided to carry lower bandwidth traffic like a video stream to a mobile device. In the instances of full wavelength requests, all parties involved might utilize a specialized protocol to dynamically set up a high bandwidth service in order to set up the proper routing.

Making cloud-to-cloud computing elastic over WAN augments everything that’s already great about the cloud. Businesses spend less because of more effective sharing of network resources, enabled by virtualized hardware. Operating costs drop because of automated processes controlled by cloud - and network-level orchestrators. Businesses that move to set up cloud-to-cloud connections via WAN will notice further cost savings and faster service setup and delivery.

For you and me, as individuals, more dynamic cloud computing means new applications we never dreamed could be delivered over a network – or applications we haven’t even dreamed of yet.

<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 13.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "MS Mincho"; mso-fareast-language: JA;">Douglas M. Public clouds. Private cloud. Clouds as a service. Even a new developers’ cloud called BlueMix. At this year’s conference, I was there to demonstrate something that runs on the cloud – our Cognitive Cooking technology.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I’m part of an IBM Research team exploring whether a computer can be creative. And we chose the culinary arts in our effort to design a system that generates surprising yet flavorful recipes not found in any cookbook. So, there I was, a computer scientist standing in front of the IBM Food Truck, showing conference goers how a cognitive system can generate unique recipes – all the while, they picked up machine-generated, Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) chef-prepared dishes like Austrian chocolate burritos (as voted on Twitter by the public).

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This cognitive cloud-based system can reason about flavor the same way we use our palate. It combines databases of recipes, ingredients, flavor compounds, food-pairing theories, as well as psychological data about human perception of taste to come up with a novel, yet pleasant, recipe.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The system starts the recipe genesis process by combing through tens of thousands of existing recipes to learn about ingredient pairing, ingredient-cuisine pairing, and dish composition. It then designs recipes by cross-referencing data on the chemistry of the ingredients, and the psychology of people’s likes and dislikes (hedonic perception theory) to model how our palate might respond to different combinations of flavors. This results in quintillions of possible recipes, which are narrowed down to around 5,000 options by employing sampling techniques.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">At Pulse, the ICE chefs then chose what dish to prepare from the samples, including this Creole shrimp-lamb dumpling (find other recipes, here).

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The capabilities of such a cognitive computing system will be truly realized when it can scale and meet performance guarantees. For this purpose, we are currently developing novel optimization algorithms that can generate recipes that, while adhering to knowledge of food chemistry, and human perception, are guaranteed to deliver one or more of our evaluation metrics, such as surprise, pleasantness and flavor pairing. Due to the nonlinear and non-convex nature of the search space (the quintillion ways in which ingredients can be combined), and the constraints on the algorithm's run-time, developing such search algorithms can be quite complex.

The cognitive cooking system runs on the bare metal servers of IBM’s SoftLayer cloud. Bare metal machines in the cloud allow us to get every ounce of performance possible, and also eliminate sharing system resources typically found in other cloud arrangements.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "MS Mincho"; mso-fareast-language: JA;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Surmounting this “creative” challenge also helps us then examine how the technology could make a bigger societal impact. For example, the system could be adjusted to take into account food allergies, dietary restrictions, or other nutritional needs. This could mean school cafeteria lunches that students like, and meet diet nutritional requirements.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Beyond food, what we learn from this research will also lay the groundwork for how the system could apply to the design and discovery of things in other domains. “Taste” could refer to how we experience retail or a good. What if computational creativity helped develop new clothing fashion or scent of cologne? These are the kinds of ideas where we’re applying this technology.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">In the meantime, we’re still working on perfecting creative recipes. You can try some of what we cook up with ICE Chef Michael Laiskonis at the South by Southwest Interactive Conference, March 7-11.
